The Big Chop
It all started on a windy day last spring when I walked in the door and my daughter (Maya) looked at me and started laughing. Between spurts of laughter she said, “Mom, your hair is crazy. Did you walk around the grocery store like that?” I looked in the mirror, and indeed I looked like I had been through a tornado.
Maya followed up by saying that a short style would look good on me – “a Jada Pinket-Smith vibe.” Not Jada’s current shaved head, but one of her earlier styles, very short on the sides and a bit longer on top. I had been secretly thinking about a short hairstyle for some time now, so this was the push I needed.
The next step was to find a good stylist as I had not been to a hair salon in years. Once again Maya had the answer, “Ask Uncle Michel, he will know someone”. I immediately texted my brother and indeed he responded immediately with a strong recommendation and an additional endorsement for the style change. I now knew this had to happen as the two most stylish people I know were on board.
Within an hour of being laughed at I had made the decision to cut off all my hair, had made an appointment with the stylist, and I was excited. It’s been about six months now since I did the big chop, and I love it. I love the look, but mostly I love the ease of care. There is very little to do in the mornings, washing my hair takes just a few minutes and my stylist showed me how to change it up with a bit of gel for special occasions.
This is where the gel saga starts…
…stay tuned for the finale
Bring on the tornadoes!
